Criteria

This software enables the migration of older files from any UNC path to any other UNC path by using an assortment of criteria such as:

  • File age
  • Size of files
  • Types of files

Targets

The target for migration can be a VM, NAS device, iSCI volume, CIFS share or it can even be cloud storage on Amazon AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. As long as the source and target volumes are NTFS formatted and are shared in the network, Archiver.FS is able to manage them and have control of the migration of content between the two.

NTFS flat folders and files

NTFS flat folders and files are used from the beginning to the finish and at no point are the files or file metadata; stored in a database or any proprietary storage device. This is important as it offers Archiver.FS with scalability that is huge; this makes it so amazingly efficient. The largest file system currently being managed by Archiver.FS stands at 3 to 4 PetaBytes in size and is done by using a single Datacenter Edition installed on a small VM with only 4v CPUs and 6GB of RAM.

Direct File Access

‘Direct File Access’ is used to offer users instant access to files that are archived thus slashing the time that it takes for the end users to access their files. When the user clicks on a link that was left behind in place of a file all the IO go straight from the user directly to the archived file. There are no agents or other software components blocking the way so users do not have to sit around waiting for a file to be moved to the live file system before there is access to it. Other files that need to be returned back to the live files a maintenance task at the end of the day – daily maintenance task can be set up to run usually at night. All information regarding where a file has been moved from and too is maintained in the file system through a clever use of directory structures with file properties.
